Choose Your Color: Spooky Halloween Anju with JINRO

Soju new most popular drink

Halloween is over, but the photos are still showing up on our feeds: the costumes, the makeup and the party tables.

Looking back, one Halloween table idea stood out: a red and white anju plate with spicy chicken feet in a deep red glaze and small rice balls shaped like ghosts. Anju is the Korean word for food served with drinks, and this one works just as well for a scary movie night or next year’s party.

Bloody Chicken Feet: A Spicy Korean Anju in Halloween Red

Spicy chicken feet, or dakbal, is a popular anju in Korea. The chili glaze turns a deep, glossy red, which makes it a natural fit for Halloween.

Never tried chicken feet? Think of it as a chewy, saucy snack you eat with your hands. Keep napkins nearby.

Ingredients

  • 500 g chicken feet
  • 1 cup JINRO soju, for boiling
  • 1 green onion
  • 1 tsp black peppercorns
  • 5 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp fine chili powder
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • A pinch of pepper

How to make it

  1. Rinse the chicken feet. Boil them in water with JINRO, the green onion and the peppercorns until tender, then drain.
  2. In a bowl, mix the chicken feet with the garlic, chili powder, soy sauce, sesame oil and pepper.
  3. Stir-fry over medium heat. Add a splash of water and cook until the sauce turns thick and glossy.

Korean home cooks often add soju to the boiling water to help remove strong smells. Prefer it milder? Use less chili powder.

Ghost Rice Balls: The Easiest Halloween Snack

These little ghosts take only a few minutes and need no special tools.

Ingredients

  • 1 bowl of warm cooked rice
  • 1/2 tbsp sesame seeds
  • 1/2 tbsp sesame oil
  • A pinch of salt
  • Black sesame seeds, for the eyes

How to make it

  1. Mix the rice with the sesame seeds, sesame oil and salt.
  2. With damp hands, shape small mounds with a wide base and a rounded top, like a ghost under a sheet.
  3. Press two black sesame seeds into each one for the eyes.

Set the ghosts on top of the chicken feet, and your Halloween plate is ready. The plain rice also helps balance the heat of the spicy sauce.

Tips for Your Next Spooky Night

Saving this for next October or a horror movie night? Boil the chicken feet earlier in the day, then glaze them right before friends arrive. The rice balls can be shaped ahead of time, too.

For the table, a red tablecloth, a few mini pumpkins and some plastic spiders are all you need. For photos, shoot the plate from above so the red sauce and white ghosts stand out.

Choose Your Color with JINRO

If you would like to add JINRO to your spooky table, pick a flavor that matches your colors and serve it chilled.

Red: JINRO Strawberry

The sweet strawberry flavor gives a fresh contrast to the spicy chili glaze, and it fits right into a red Halloween theme.

Pink: JINRO Grapefruit

JINRO Grapefruit brings a light, tangy citrus note that goes well with the rich sauce.

Yellow: JINRO Lemon

JINRO Lemon has a clean, zesty flavor that suits the mild sesame rice balls.
